The cleaning made it worse. That’s not a defective rug—that’s a predictable outcome of cleaning a rug the wrong way.
When moisture gets pushed into a rug’s foundation without being fully flushed out, it reactivates everything that’s been sitting dormant down there: dried urine residue, body oils, bacteria, pet dander, organic debris. The surface dries in a few hours. The foundation stays wet for days. What was odorless and locked in place gets stirred up, wicks back through the fibers toward the surface, and the rug smells worse on day three than it did before anyone touched it.
This process has a name: wicking. It is the single most common reason a rug smells worse after cleaning. The problem isn’t hidden or complicated. The cleaning method reached far enough into the foundation to disturb what was in there — but not far enough to remove it.
A rug is not a carpet. Wall-to-wall carpet sits on a pad and a subfloor. When you clean it from the top down, the moisture and soil have somewhere to go. An area rug lying flat on a hardwood floor has no airflow beneath it and a tightly woven foundation — typically cotton, wool, or linen — that holds moisture like a sponge.
Everything that lands on a rug over the course of years works its way down through the pile into that foundation. Carpet cleaning machines and consumer extractors are designed to pull moisture out of synthetic carpet fiber. They are not built to extract moisture from a densely woven rug foundation. So the machine wets the foundation, stirs up the settled contaminants, and then leaves most of it right where it was — now dissolved and active instead of dry and dormant.
The surface dries. The foundation doesn’t. The odor that rises over the following days isn’t new. It was always in the rug. The cleaning moved it.
A rug that never seemed to smell like pet urine can come off a carpet cleaning machine reeking of ammonia. This is not a malfunction. It is a direct result of how urine behaves in a rug foundation.
Urine dries into uric acid crystals that embed deep in the base structure of the rug. In dry conditions, those crystals are essentially odorless. The moment moisture is introduced — a carpet cleaner, a humid summer, a spilled glass of water — the crystals rehydrate and release ammonia gas. The more thoroughly the rug gets wet during an in-home cleaning, the more completely those crystals activate. A rug that smelled like nothing before the cleaning can smell powerfully of urine within 24 hours of being cleaned.
That process does not happen on your living room floor with a truck-mounted extractor. It requires a dedicated wash facility.
If the smell is damp or mildew-like rather than ammonia-sharp, the foundation didn’t dry quickly enough after cleaning. Mold spores exist at low levels in every indoor environment. A wet rug foundation, held flat against a hardwood floor with no airflow, at ambient room temperature, is the exact condition they need to establish.
The pile surface dries in two to four hours. A thick wool or hand-knotted cotton foundation can stay wet for three to five days after in-home cleaning. During that window, mold takes hold inside the foundation, completely invisible from above. Fans and open windows dry the surface further. They do not reach the interior of a tightly woven foundation.
The mold smell does not improve on its own because the source is still active. Running more fans or leaving the rug outside for a day addresses the surface — the mold colony in the foundation continues.
Wool, silk, and viscose rugs carry a distinct risk that synthetic rugs don’t: they react badly to alkaline detergents.
Standard carpet cleaning solutions are formulated for nylon and polyester — synthetic fibers that tolerate high-pH chemistry. Wool is a protein fiber with a natural pH of around 5.5 to 7. Alkaline detergents strip the fiber’s lanolin, which produces a faint sour or animal smell that wasn’t there before cleaning. Viscose and rayon-blend rugs — common in retail area rugs — are made from plant-based cellulose that degrades when exposed to strong chemistry or prolonged moisture, producing a faint sweet or chemical odor.
Neither of these reactions signals permanent fiber destruction. Both indicate the wrong chemistry was used and the rug needs a proper rinse with pH-neutral solution. They also indicate the cleaner did not identify the fiber type before applying chemistry — which is the step that prevents all of it.
At ATC, every rug is examined before it enters the wash floor. Fiber type is identified. Dye stability is tested. Chemistry is selected for that specific rug. A polypropylene synthetic and a hand-knotted Persian do not get the same solution.
Another round of in-home cleaning with the same equipment will make the odor worse. More moisture into a foundation that already didn’t dry means more wicking, more reactivation, and more opportunity for mold growth.
The rug needs to leave the house.
First: a full assessment of what’s in the foundation — black-light inspection for urine, fiber identification, dye evaluation. The cleaning approach changes based on what’s actually there.
Second: full submersion washing with fiber-appropriate chemistry. The rug is completely submerged so the water reaches the foundation and flushes contaminants out rather than redistributing them. The rinse runs until the water is genuinely clear.
Third: forced-air drying in a controlled environment that brings the foundation — not just the pile — fully dry within hours. Mold that has been active in a rug’s foundation for four days is easier to address than mold that has been active for three weeks. Urine crystals that were recently reactivated respond better to treatment than crystals that have re-dried and re-bonded.

If the source is purely surface moisture that didn’t dry quickly, airflow helps over two to three days. If the source is urine crystals, mold in the foundation, or a chemical reaction with the fiber, drying does nothing to the source. The smell stays, and in the case of mold, worsens.
A smell that persists beyond 48 hours is not a drying issue. The source of the odor was not addressed by the cleaning. Ask specifically what treatment was applied for sub-surface contamination — in most cases, the answer will make clear that no such treatment happened.
Surface deodorizers address the surface layer of the pile. The odor originating from a rug foundation is physically out of reach for anything applied from the top. Baking soda and enzyme sprays provide temporary surface masking. The source continues.
Wet dog odor after cleaning almost always means pet body oils or dried urine residue in the foundation reactivated when the rug got wet. The mechanism is identical to urine crystal reactivation. Treat it as urine contamination until a professional inspection determines otherwise.
