3 Reasons a STARK Rug Is Treated Differently Than Wall-to-Wall Carpet

Oct 31, 2026

A STARK rug may sit on the floor, but it should never be cleaned like wall-to-wall carpet.
Carpet is installed, anchored, and often made to withstand years of foot traffic in a specific
room. A STARK rug is a movable textile: it may be wool, silk, viscose, or a blend; it may be
hand-knotted, hand-tufted, or machine-made; and its dyes, backing, and construction may
respond very differently to moisture, heat, and cleaning chemistry.

That difference is why a responsible rug washer inspects the rug before choosing a method.
Here are three reasons STARK rugs require a more specialized approach than the carpet in the
rest of your home.

A STARK Rug Is a Textile, Not an Installed Floor Covering

Wall-to-wall carpet is usually evaluated as part of the room: its fiber type, pile height, backing,

and installation conditions. A STARK rug has to be evaluated as an individual textile.

That means looking at more than the visible surface. Before washing, a cleaner should

consider:

● Fiber content, including wool, silk, viscose, cotton, or blends

● Construction, such as hand-knotted, hand-tufted, machine-made, or flatwoven

● Dye stability and the risk of color bleed

● Existing wear, moth damage, fringe condition, odors, and prior cleaning residue

● Whether the rug can safely tolerate immersion, controlled moisture, or a lower-moisture

method

STARK’s own care guidance distinguishes area rugs from installed carpet and recommends

professional cleaning for deeper care rather than treating every floor covering the same way.

This matters because two rugs can look similar but behave completely differently in water. A

wool rug with stable dyes may tolerate a full wash, while a silk accent rug, a viscose blend, or a

rug with unstable dyes may require a much more cautious process.

2. STARK Rugs Often Use Natural Fibers and Detailed Dyes

Many STARK rugs use premium natural fibers and rich, detailed color work. Those qualities are
part of what makes the rugs beautiful—but they also make them less forgiving of aggressive
cleaning.

Wall-to-wall carpet is often designed for broad, repeatable maintenance. A designer rug may
have denser pile, more delicate fibers, intricate patterns, and dyes that can migrate when
exposed to the wrong pH, excessive moisture, or heat.
Common risks include:
● Color bleed, especially around contrasting borders or detailed patterns
● Pile distortion from aggressive agitation
● Browning or stiffness from over-wetting and slow drying
● Residue buildup from store-bought spotting products
● Shrinkage or texture change when heat and moisture are misused
STARK specifically advises against steam cleaning area rugs and recommends professional
hand-washing with a pH-neutral detergent when a deeper clean is needed. That guidance
reflects an important point: the goal is not simply to get the rug wet. It is to remove soil without
changing the rug’s color, texture, shape, or finish.

3. Rug Washing Removes Soil Carpet Cleaning Often Leaves Behind

Wall-to-wall carpet cleaning often focuses on the surface and the backing that remains installed
in the home. A rug, however, can be taken to a facility, inspected on both sides, and cleaned
more thoroughly.
Fine soil does not just sit on top of a rug. Grit, dust, pet hair, and airborne particles work down
into the base of the pile. Over time, that dry soil acts like sandpaper against the fibers,
contributing to dullness, matting, and premature wear.
A proper rug-washing process typically includes:
● A pre-wash inspection of fibers, dyes, construction, and existing damage
● Dry soil removal before moisture is introduced
● A cleaning method selected for the specific rug—not a one-size-fits-all process
● Controlled washing and rinsing
● Controlled drying to reduce the risk of browning, mildew, or stiffness
● Final grooming and inspection before the rug is returned
This is one of the biggest differences between carpet cleaning and rug washing. Carpet cleaning
is often a maintenance service performed in the home. Rug washing is a textile-care process
performed with the rug removed from the room, examined closely, and cleaned according to its
own construction.

What This Means for Long Island Homeowners

If you own a STARK rug, the safest approach is not to treat it as an extension of your carpet.
Vacuum it gently with suction rather than a beater bar, blot spills quickly without rubbing, and
avoid DIY deep-cleaning methods that introduce too much moisture or leave detergent behind.

When the rug needs more than routine care, look for a cleaner who will inspect it before
washing it. At ATC Rug Washing, rugs are evaluated for fiber type, construction, dye stability,
odor sources, and existing damage before a cleaning method is selected. The team washes
rugs at its Farmingdale facility and provides pickup and delivery throughout Nassau and Suffolk
County.
A STARK rug deserves the same consideration you would give any fine textile in your home.
The right cleaning method should protect the very qualities that made you choose it in the first
place.
